Description

Supda/Chhaj in Wedding Rituals

  1. Ritual Usage:

    • Chura Ceremony (Punjabi Wedding): In a Punjabi wedding, the Chura ceremony is a significant pre-wedding ritual where the bride's maternal uncle gifts her a set of red and white bangles (chura). The supda is often used to present these bangles. The chura is placed in the supda, which is then covered with a white cloth, and prayers are recited to bless the bangles and the bride.
    • Grain Winnowing (Other North Indian Weddings): In some North Indian wedding rituals, particularly in rural areas, the supda or chhaj is used in symbolic rituals where grains are winnowed to represent prosperity, abundance, and the separation of good from bad, symbolizing the couple's future life together.
